What could possibly go wrong?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Maybe they should fire their IT staff too.

In related news, I’m not at all convinced that giving kids iPads will magically make them better students.

The Ipad is a bizarre learning tool. A well managed one can ease a student’s day significantly. But doing it properly is resource intensive.

Is ITs fault not the kid. I could pull up bombs on a school chrome book but the would come down on me so fast.

I’ve lost track of how many times my boys have come home and said that they didn’t have anything to do in class so the teacher let them be on their phones.

Not to dissimilar from my memories of public education. I feel like I didn’t learn a damn thing until I went to college.

Definitely feel the same about high school and was in one of the best public districts in the state. I didn’t get that much out of college either, life lessons I got those for sure .

Hoping I’ll be able to send my little one to private school.

There has been a series of thoughtful discussions and meetings on screen time with our elementary school. There’s no perfect solution (in terms of the amount of time) but there certainly are better ways to manage the content...

At the very very very least, have something on topic that you can hand them and they can do individually.

We’ve taken a hard line on the phones at my school. No use of them at all. No, you can’t use it as a timer. Here’s a stopwatch. No, you can’t take a picture of your project, your chromebook has two cameras. We’re monitoring kids’ locations much closer. Everybody has to sign a pass and sign out of the room they’re leaving. If you’re tardy, even with a pass, you have to sign in . It’s been a LOT calmer in the building this year. Last year was chaotic, to say the least. I had a few days that if I di dn’t had a family to support , I woul d have tossed my  keys on the principal’s desk and dri ven somewhere until I ran out of roads.

I just went to my son’s 3rd-grade orientation and it was almost entirely about their Chromebooks being issued this year. It was literally like sitting through a corporate presentation, so my eyes glazed over.

I get that kids need to be “digital citizens” or whatever (hey, I’m full-time remote and I’m 100% dependent on a PC for my job at all times). But I always thought giving them a stationary PC at school was just fine. Sending it home with them is just a bad idea all around...it puts almost all the burden on the kids/families and takes a lot off the teachers. Decentralization of homework.

Are they learning Word/Excel/Powerpoint? Nope, all Google Suite. I always knew Google was smart, but getting in the education space is the brightest thing they’ve ever done. Imagine a bunch of pre-teens who ONLY know how to exist in the Google ecosystem...that’s where our district is headed.

people talk about this as if it’s going to make things magically cheaper. Sorry, textbooks aren’t expensive because of the paper.

plus, handing high-value, desirable devices to kids (many of whom are irresponsible, destructive thieves) sounds like a good way to pour money down the drain.

An iPad is a terrible learning tool. A proper PC is much better.

Both of my kids’ schools issue convertible laptops with touch screens. The kids are very adept at flipping between tablet and PC mode, but the primary use is as a PC, not a tablet. Virtual keyboards obscure most of the screen and are slow for typing. Adding a keyboard to an iPad helps, but then it’s really not much more than a crappy imitation of a PC.

I have both, but my laptop sees way more use than my tablet.

I feel like computing devices are important, but I’d think a real computer would be better.

Also, I tend to think that for younger students, you’d want to limit them to just a whitelisted set of sites/apps. Older students are harder since they can probably figure out how to bypass filters, and do need a broader range of stuff. And 1st graders probably shouldn’t be on the web unsupervised at all.

The tablet I inherited has been put to use as a GPS/Moving map for flying, but before that it was used mostly for games.

We bought our high schooler a Chromebook his freshman year. He’s using the hell out of it. I might get one for myself to take to the schools when I teach. If I lose it, or if it’s stolen, it’s not like losing a $1500 MacBook.

We bought our high schooler a Chromebook when he started 9th grade, and it’s done very well. Of course, part of our decision was that EVERYTHING the district does is with Google, so it just sort of made sense. It also wasn’t that expensive, so if it gets lost or stolen or broken it’s not the end of the world (he never takes it to school anyway). I pretty much stay out of the Googlesphere except for gmail, and I always have trouble figuring out how to find and do things there. I guess I should just ask my kids.

LOL, yep. My issue is much more about the “required” nature of it at such a young age. Literally they can’t even do half of their homework without it, but it also forces the parents to prematurely have to set new family policies around internet usage and all those things we had planned to avoid for a few more years.

Just seems like a bit of laziness on the part of the administration — saves space in the building (no computer lab or in-class PCs) and puts the burden on the students/parents more than traditional means.

I love the Chromebook idea ...the solid state hardware and OS are really sound .
